Elinchrom EL 19360 Skyport Universal Trigger Set Review

Elinchrom EL 19360 Skyport Universal Trigger Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went back and forth for a long time prior to choosing Skyports over PocketWizards. The primary reason - cost (half the cost to be precise). I typically purchase top-of-the-line products for my bread-and-butter gear (which would mean I should purchase the PocketWizards), but for most users in most scenarios, the Skyports are just as good, if not better (check out specs between the two) than the PocketWizards. The PocketWizards can trigger lights up to 1500 feet, but let's be realistic. How many of you have ever needed to trigger anything that far (I'm sure some of you have, but it's so rare that it hardly can be considered a true value add for the average user). Also, the Skyports are significantly smaller and doesn't get in the way like PocketWizards, and as far as general build quality is concerned, both brands feel somewhat cheap. I feel like radio triggers are in general overpriced for the technology that they utilize, so why not get the less overpriced "premium" brand.
BUT, if you are more interested in fashionable photography products or if you are a professional who really needs to stretch the limits of a trigger, go for the PockeWizards. They are the industry standard. Otherwise, save your money and spend it on more important things.
Also, like others have noted, the reason the first poster coulnd't sync at anything above 1/250th of a second is because his camera's top sync speed was probably 1/250th of a second (eg. my D200's top sync speed is 1/250th of a second).

I use this flash on my Nikon D90 and have no problems with it at all. Exposure is pretty much always spot on, and the wireless functionality works flawlessly with Nikon's commander mode. The auto zoom head, and flash power are great for my needs. I think it is very comparable to the SB600, especially seeing as it is about twenty five dollars cheaper just now. It is German, so well made, and has a USB input for firmware updates is a useful and welcome addition. My only complaints are minor. The batter cover is a little stiff to open and close, and the menu buttons are not the best, but it overall, it functions very well.

Sigma EF-530 DG ST Electronic Flash for Canon DSLR Review

Sigma EF-530 DG ST Electronic Flash for Canon DSLR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let's start off with the good things:
-powerful guide number
-tilt swivel head
-focus assist lamp (works great!)
-good (but could be better) build quality
Now with the cons:
-huge size. Not a problem for me but some people find it bad.
-the on/off/mode switch is really tiny and requires precision to switch. This becomes frustrating when you need to turn on the flash quickly.
-only three modes (ttl, full power, 1/16 power)
-bad manual
-no click position on 45 or 30 degrees (tilt)
Overall this is a really basic flash. In the ttl mode your camera picks the right exposure for you. In the full and 1/16 power modes you have to set the exposure for your self. The zoom function seems to work good, but there is no manual control to it (unlike in the Super edition). The fastest shutter speed with it is the same as with the built-in flash (1/180 on K200D). So if you want a good flash with which you can go pro go for the Super edition. But if you are a beginner this is a really powerful basic flash for the money.

When there's insufficient or unsuitable light available to take a picture, it's of paramount importance to have a ready source of supplementary light to fulfill the need. That's where Sigma's EF-530 DG ST electronic flash comes into play. Designed exclusively for Canon digital SLR cameras, the flash offers a powerful guide number of 174 feet/53 meters and boasts the latest TTL automatic exposure system for easy operation. More significantly, the EF-530 DG ST is outfitted with a host of handy features, including an autozoom function that automatically sets the optimum illumination angle in accordance with the lens' focal length (with a range from 24mm to 105mm), a confirmation "ready" light that indicates when the flashgun is fully charged, and an auto power-off function that automatically shuts off the display to save battery power. And users will love the tilting flashgun head, which users can tilt up by 90 degrees, to the left by 180 degrees, to the right by 90 degrees, and down by 7 degrees, making it easy to perform a bounce flash. Plus, the flashgun features a manual flash mode in addition to the automatic mode, making it possible to set the flash power level to full or 1/16.
Features:
Autozoom function that automatically sets optimum illumination angle
Covers a focal length from 24mm to 105mm
A built-in wide panel that covers the 17mm angle
A tilting flashgun head for bounce flash (up by 90 degrees, to the left by 180 degrees, and to the right by 90 degrees)
A down tilt angle of 7 degrees for close-up photography
Runs on 4 AA alkaline or rechargeable ni-cad or NiMH batteries
Measures 3 by 5.5 by 4.6 inches (W x H x D)

As a camera hobbyist, this flash does everything I technically need. Great control and very predictable. The SB800 has a lot of other features but I feel in my humble opinion, it's not worth the extra cash. To whomever is reading this, please compare the functions of both to see what you need to determine what is right for you. I use it on my D70.

Paterson InterFit "E" Flash, Flat Panel on Camera Flash. Review

Paterson InterFit E Flash, Flat Panel on Camera Flash.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Got a couple of these with a package of used stuff and was quite impressed. Light is much softer than with a bare bulb and makes a very noticeable difference.
The hot shoe connectors are a great design and enable one or two to be held in each hot shoe mount. I've had some problem with getting a good pc cord connection, but pc cords do tend to go so I'm not sure if it's the connector or the cord.
Will be perfect for trips to the inlaws with some small light stands. With a 550ex in manual mode on my 1Ds, and the built in slaves, I can meter with FEL through the camera too, so no need to bring a light meter. Just need to adjust the flash to subject distance to change the amount of light.

Bought this flash and grip for my fuji s7000. could'nt find one that was specific to this camera but tried this anyway. Results were very very good - night and day difference from using built in flash and set up was very straight forward. Plus side I did'nt have to worry about other flashes having voltage issues or needing adapters. Flash is very quick to be on the ready status - still playing with it to see how long battery lasts but otherwiswe excelent purchase. Took a while to get here but the wait was worth it.

Kit includes: 1) Cameta 2800 Automatic Electronic Flash; 2) Sunpak Digital Camera Slave Grip. >>> The Cameta 2800 Flash has two automatic power settings, a correct exposure verification indicator, a bounce head adjustable up to 90-degrees for soft lighting effects, and energy-saving thyristor circuitry for faster recycling and longer battery life. While most camera's built-in flash units are only effective from a distance of 8 to 12 feet, the Cameta 2800 Flash gives you the freedom to be more than four times farther away. With this much additional flash power, it's almost like having a bolt of lightning at your command. >>> The Sunpak Digital Slave Grip has a comfortable contoured hand-grip with quick-release camera platform and enables the use of the Cameta 2800 Flash as a wireless remote "slave" to complement your camera's built-in flash. The Digital Slave Grip can even be used off-camera with the 2800 Flash as a remote slave for more professional and creative lighting effects. >>> The built-in flashes of most digital cameras emit a "pre-flash" and/or a "red-eye" pulse that fires before the shutter opens, followed by an additional flash pulse which actually lights your picture. This "pre-flash" or "red-eye" pulse confuses other non-digital flash and slave units, causing them to go off at the wrong time, rendering them useless for your digital camera. But the advanced pulse-counting digital circuitry of the Sunpak Digital Slave Grip is not fooled by the "pre-flash." Five LED-indicated pulse-counting and delay-variations are incorporated into the Digital Slave Grip allowing it to ignore "pre-flashes" and fire the powerful 2800 Flash at the precise moment your camera requires. Set it up with your camera's built-in flash just once -- using our included easy-to-follow step-by-step directions -- and you are all set for noticeably better flash pictures from that moment on. >>> Requires a total of 8 AA batteries, available separately.

I tried this diffuser out and I could hardly notice a difference in the pictures with or without the diffuser. I was hoping to get results similar to a bounce flash, but I think I'm better off creating a bounce card for my SB-400 using white construction paper. Don't waste your money on this.

Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System Review

Nikon R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, let us be clear on what this kit is and what it is intended for: this is not a powerful lighting system designed to meet the demands of a professional photographer taking thousands of pictures in a single session, nor is it intended to be. If you attempt to use it continuously, taking photos at full power at six shots per second, you are going to burn it out.
Instead, it is a well thought out lighting kit that easily meets the needs of an advanced amateur for close-up photography, portraiture, and a lot more. Don't let the name of the kit fool you. This thing does a lot more than close-ups. I can think of no single tool that will improve most photographers' life more.
The SB-R200 flash units which are the heart of the system are dirt simple to use. They have only two dials and two buttons. One dial selects group; the other the channel. One button turns it on and off; the other fires a "target" light to assist with autofocus. That is it. No messing around with bunches of dials and knobs, reading LCDs, or fumbling through menus.
The flash units have special feet that mount in a ring that is attached to the front of your lens with adaptors. Five adaptors are included which fit the vast majority of Nikkor lenses. I could wish that the kit included the UR-5 adaptor for the 60mm Micro-Nikkor, but it does not. Screwing the R1 kit onto the front of this lens will obstruct close focusing. But this is the only lens that has this issue. Other micro-Nikkors do not need the UR-5. I should also mention that with a lens like the 60mm micro-Nikkor you will have to use manual focus (which is how most people use it anyway). The front of this lens travels in and out a couple of inches over the focusing range. As small as the SB-R200s are, they are still too much of a strain on the tiny focusing motor. Anyway, the lack of a UR-5 ring is why I rate the kit only 4 stars instead of 5.
The mounting feet of the SB-R200 will not fit in a normal flash shoe. Neither would you want to do that in normal operation. The whole point of these flash units is to use them off camera. I suspect that most of the time they will be used simply by having the photographer, the model, or an assistant hold in a hand. If you do need to mount them on anything, they come with special shoes so that you can set them on any flat surface or mount them on a tripod or bracket.
The SB-R200 flash units cannot be attached to the camera in any way that will allow them to be used as a primary flash. You have to trip them wirelessly with either the SU-800 Commander unit, the built-in flash on Nikon CLS compatible cameras, or a Nikon Speedlight that has a commander mode, such as the SB-800. The SB-R200s can be also tripped using cables running from the SU-800 Commander unit mounted on any camera, including non-CLS cameras.
Nikon's Creative Lighting System allows flashes to be set up in three groups: A, B, and C. Each 'group' (usually a single light), can have its own exposure adjustments and can be set either for TTL metering or manual firing. A group can have as many flash units as you want, but more than three and they start to interfere with each others' ability to read exposure.
So, you can set up, say, one light mounted on the front of the lens in Group A and another light in Group B held in the hand down and to one side of a subject such as a flower. Group B will give definition and depth to the picture, while Group A will provide the main lighting.
Or you could set up three lights off camera to light a food display on a table -- Group B an SB-R200 from the side; Group C another SB-R200 bounced off the wall on the other side to soften shadows, and Group A your main flash, such as an SB-800, from above. You use the built-in camera flash in commander mode, with the little shield included in the kit so that its light does not get in the way, to trigger the whole thing. The result is a well-lit display with soft, barely visible shadows.
You can do some pretty good stuff with portraits, too, eliminating the shadows behind your subject and even using colored gels to liven up the background a bit by bouncing one of the SB-R200s off the wall behind the subject.
Recycling time has been reported to be slow, but I don't see it. Anyway, this system is targeted toward a photographer who likes to take a shot, rearrange things a bit, and take another one. So recycling time should not be an issue anyway. Its small size, light weight, and many methods of mounting flash units will encourage the photographer to experiment.
Everything is very small and portable. The essentials can easily be packed up and taken into the field in three small pouches included with the set.
The vinyl storage box that comes with the set is not particularly robust. It has a short shoulder strap, but it is obviously not meant to be knocked around a lot or carried for long distances. Use the field pouches for that. They are tough and heavy and appear able to withstand just about anything.
The flexible arm clamp appears to be a little above average quality and strength for such a gadget. The diffuser is unusually thick plastic and seems hardy enough.
The instruction manuals are all geared to using this on a Nikon D70 with the SU-800 Commander unit that is included only in the R1C1 kit. The SB-800 flash does everything that the SU-800 does (except it does not have a specific close-up mode and it cannot fire the target lights of all the SU-R200s simultaneously; features the SB-800 hardly needs) but you will have to study the manual for that flash thoroughly if you want to use the SB-800 with this system. And that is the big weakness of the manuals included with the R1 system. They do not include specific instructions on how to set things up with any camera other than the D70 or any commander unit other than the SU-800, so while you are learning to use this thing you are constantly referring to other manuals.
Everything in this kit uses CR123A lithium batteries. None are included in the kit. The poor Nikon user now has to add these batteries to his kit, along with extra EN series batteries for the camera and AA batteries for his SB-600 or SB-800 flash units. Well, at least the CR123As don't weigh much.

So I've had this for a month now and have taken it to weddings and into nightclubs. Yes it definitely does what it's suppose to do which is to have your strobe right on top of your camera event when you turn your camera for portrait. There are two things that bother me about this product: the top part of the bracket which holds the strobe is now much looser than when I received it. you have to tighten them again to make it stable again. The other thing is, I have a battery grip on my camera and when i shoot portrait, the most bottom part of the bracket (where the logo is in the picture) annoys me. because it's between the grip and my hand.
But other than that, it does what its made for. What can I say, you get what you pay for.

Just FYI... this item is not made of Aluminum, all metal is steel. I thought that perhaps 21 ounces of aluminum was quite heavy for this, and now I know the reason why. I don't know if they make this model in aluminum, but when I placed magnets on the one I received, they stuck very nicely... everywhere except the plastic! Definitely NOT Aluminum! Be aware of this before purchasing.
I gave it three stars because of the misrepresentation and also because it would have served my purposes if it was actually aluminum (lighter)

This thing is built like a tank! I like that I can carry the camera/bracket/flash combo securely and safely by the padded handle.
The accompanying video shows some features and a few minor issues with this bracket. (In the case of weight, I consider the issue to really be a feature.)It's shown with a Zeikos ZE-OCSCN Off Camera Shoe Cord for Nikon Flash. (I have posted a review for that product on its listing as well.) Together they make a very good low cost combination for getting your flash off your camera.
BTW, I feel that honest, effective reviews take the place of first-hand experiences that are lacking in online shopping. LumiQuest Soft Screen Review

Looking at the reviews some love this and some find it so-so. I think the real difference in experience depends on your camera.
The Nikon D80 built-in flash juts forward more than the flash on the camera shown. The result is that the flash is pushed right up against the diffuser screen. If the screen was further from the flash, I am sure it would work better.
As it is, this does not really work well for my Nikon D80.
However, for my older 35mm SLR, a Nikon N70, this works well because there is sufficient distance between the flash and the screen.
Bottom line: If you have a Nikon D80, this will not help much.

Diffuse your pop up flash and prevent red eye. Quick and convenient to put on & take off. This is the answer to most on camera flash problems. Light loss is about 2/3 of a stop

The benefit of this package from Cameta is that it's a little bit of everything that you need. Between the Flash unit, an SB-600 which is a great stand alone flash, but is capable of being upgraded by an SB-800 or SB-900 whichever price bracket suits your fancy. It provides great lighting both bounced and direct.
The Stroboframe and i-TTL cord are worth their weights in gold if you ask me. The stroboframe is lightweight, easy to attach, and easy to use. With just a push, you keep the flash above the lens, for when you switch from landscape to portrait. The cord simply allows the camera to communicate with the flash while it is being used off camera.
Lastly, Cameta is kind enough to give you 8 batteries and a charger, to keep you flash flashing.
In short, a great package.

Great product for the $$. Easy to use, great output and fast shipping. This flash is exactly what i needed for my photography. Using the rotating bracket helps reduce red eye and harsh shadows. I love this flash and kit. I use it with a Nikon D80 and a Nikon D5000 and works wonders. There is a definite difference when using this kit.
