(More customer reviews)I got this grip from Satechi for use with my D300. I usually prefer to stick to Nikon-made accessories (with the exception of some lenses) for my cameras, but took the leap on this little item and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. It holds 2 EnEL batteries (same as the one used by the camera) or AAs and also permits the on-board battery to stay docked, so you have a total of three in the camera. This is more than enough for even my most snap-happy expeditions. It does make the camera a bit heavier and slightly unwieldy, but if you wanted a point-and-shoot you wouldn't have gotten the D300 in the first place. The extra LCD is not linked to the camera and isn't completely useful, but helps control the grip's functions. The unit secures very firmly to the bottom of the D300 via the tripod mount (and has a mount of its own on the bottom) and has a clever little interior compartment to store the rubber power interface cover from the bottom of the camera. Good design.
In addition, this unit comes with a battery controlled remote control, which is a real convenience. Please note that this is an IR remote, so requires line-of-sight to the front of the camera. It is sensitive enough that the person triggering the remote can be out of frame for but the most wide-angle lenses. Combine that with the fact that this package is is hundreds less than the Nikon equivalent and it's a real bargain.
The only little thing I don't like is that the unit is all-plastic (in comparison to the D300's magnesium body), so it doesn't feel quite as robust as the camera itself, but for this price, that's a tiny quibble. All in all highly recommended.
