When I first started taking photography a little more seriously and longed for a telephoto lens that would have the kind of reach I needed without costing an arm and a leg, I decided that this was the lens for me. I couldn't find reviews on it anywhere, but I did find a few pictures people took, and they looked O.K. I thought that with a little bit of patience and skill I would be able to take some great shots. The pictures that had me convinced can be found here: [...]
I was wrong. I went to the beach to take some surf photos. While I was able to take pictures of surfers far away, the detail in their faces and wet suits was lacking. In fact, although my 200mm didn't have the kind of reach the 500mm had, I got more detail with my 200mm lens than with the Rokinon 500mm. This lens was a real disappointment (at least for me). While the construction of the lens seemed O.K., the quality of the photos was lacking when I viewed them at their full size. I'm very finicky about my pictures. I like them sharp, good contrast, good color, and nice bokeh. I own a Nikon D40X which is a pretty decent DSLR camera. I've never had trouble taking great photos with it until I bought this lens. The pictures often turned out blurry, and if they were somewhat sharp, a lot of detail that should have been there was missing. I couldn't live with those results. Out of 200-300 photos, maybe one or two were usable.
I have since saved up a few bucks and bought a Sigma 50-500mm. The quality is FAR better with the Sigma, it has auto-focus build into the lens, and it's just a world of difference. Although almost ten times more expensive, you really get what you pay for. If you want a good telephoto lens but don't want to spend $4,000.00 on one, the Sigma 50-500mm is a great choice. Forget the Rokinon, unless you really believe you'll be able to do better with it than I could. I guess anything is possible!
